FLEETWOOD MAC
New Orleans 1970 [no label, 3CD]
Live at The Warehouse (1820 Tchoupitoulas, Felicity), New Orleans, LA; January 30-31, 1970. Very good soundboard.
Fleetwood Mac was part of a triple bill listed as: The Flock, Fleetwood Mac, and The Grateful Dead on 1/30/70, and 1/31/70. The Grateful Dead played a bust fund benefit on 2/1/70 at The Warehouse as well (with Peter Green sitting in with them).
The January 30 show has sometimes been mistakenly shared as January 29, 1970.
gv0000 commented at Dime:
I just read the recollection of the shows in New Orleans January 30 - February 1, 1970 in Dinky Dawson’s “Life On The Road: The Incredible Rock ‘n’ Roll Adventures of Dinky Dawson.” Dinky Dawson was the sound man for Fleetwood Mac during this time period. He says that the shows were Friday & Saturday January 30 & 31, 1970 and the Dead were busted early Sunday morning and they held a benefit show on Sunday night February 1. He says that Fleetwood Mac played a separate set prior to the Dead set. He also confirms that members of the Mac did jam with the Dead during their set. The Flock did not play on Sunday as they had a prior commitment.
Uploader’s notes:
Listen to what Peter Green says before playing “All Over Again” He was obviously troubled at the time. About five months later he left Fleetwood Mac. He gives a stunning performance on this track!
Mick Fleetwood remembering this night:
“That Dead song with the line ‘busted down on Bourbon Street’ (Truckin’, from the LP American Beauty), that was the night that Fleetwood Mac played with them at The Warehouse in New Orleans. Owsley had spiked the water fountains and, after our set, John McVie was out of it, and couldn’t handle the fact that the Dead were going to get up and play! So he stood in the audience while the rest of us jammed with the Dead. The audience loved it - a massive freak-out.”
“That was what caused Owsley eventually to go to jail. We were nearly there. We were following their car back to the hotel, absolutely out of it on acid. I drove the car from the back seat with my feet while somebody else worked the pedals from the side - nobody was in the driver’s seat. Oh God!” Mick nearly weeps. “We got lost and, by the time we arrived, they’d been busted…
“Back in those days with acid and mescalin and stuff, we had a laugh - to start with. But these were isolated incidents. We weren’t drug orientated at all, really. But when Jerry went off, we’d been in San Francisco, on mescalin…”
Thanks to SIRMick for cleaning up the January 31, 1970 tracks. Thanks to the kind folks who probably shared this on the net (Sharing The Groove?) in 2004; and to Pestilence and everyone who helped to keep the shows alive at Dime.
SIRMick’s notes (2004):
- a few large pops removed
- the first 14 minutes of d2 were heavily biased to the left channel. I have use the channel mixer and boosted volume by 4 decibels to correct this.
- vocal presence has been boosted a little using iZotope Ozone
- there was a small gap at about 20:48 on d3t01 which I closed
- volume boosted by 3.4 decibels in left channel from d3t03 3:37 through to the end d3. It sounds like two
different sources have been used as the sound is cleaner from d3t03 3:37 onwards.
