JOHN ZORN
Switzerland 1986 [no label, 1CD]
Live at the Altes Schlachthaus, Bern, Switzerland; May 25, 1986. Excellent FM broadcast.
In 2000, John Zorn released an album called Hsu Feng, named after a Taiwanese wuxia actress best known for her performances in King Hu’s films. In fact, many of the album’s tracks are named after the King Hu films, such as The Valiant Ones, The Fate Of Lee Khan, Dragon Gate Inn and Hsia Nu (A Touch Of Zen).
Dean McFarlane reviewing the Hsu Feng album at allmusic.com:
This CD provides an exceptional overview of the work of John Zorn, as it collects numerous short works which exhibit his groundbreaking methods in structured improvisation known as game pieces, which are among his most highly acclaimed achievements of the ’80s period. These works date from 1977 through 1989 and keep with the tradition of his widely known Cobra works, whereby Zorn harnessed the ferocity of free improvised music, avant-garde, and jazz and fused it with the sensibilities of European modern classical music. Hsu Feng is named after the Chinese kung fu actress and the work is as dramatic, violent, and fast-paced as most of her onscreen appearances.
In 1986, Zorn, as part of The Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet, released Voodoo.
Scott Yanow at allmusic.com noted: “This unusual album is an unlikely success… Zorn creates fairly boppish solos with occasional hints at more advanced improvising techniques.” Rolling Stone quipped: “Here Zorn sounds like he’s having serious fun.”
