BARRY GIBB
Philadelphia 2014 [no label, 3CD]

Live at the Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, PA; May 20, 2014. Fairly to very good audience recording.

This one’s really for the fans. With a catalogue so broad, only wished Barry had included My World, Melody Fair or even Children Of The World… but he did throw in a Springsteen cover, I’m On Fire.

Thanks to mrsaureus for recording the show and sharing it at Dime. Unfortunately, the people around taper mrsaureus can be a bit distracting.

mrsaureus noted:

Aptly titled “Mythology”, the show had a strong pitch to hagiography: people (and not just women) quite literally gasped when Barry walked out on stage at the start of the show (you can hear it on the tape), and between songs the crowd was content to stand and applaud and shout entreaties of devotion for as long as he was patient to stand and wave. At 67, Barry still has his good looks mostly intact: hair is a little thinner on top but still leonine, his eyes are bright and expressive and he’s trim with no flush and no puff. From the perspective of the crowd he looked very “fit” indeed: only the merciless magnification of the monitor really showed his age. Vocally, opener “Jive Talkin’” took off slowly with muted effect, but warmed quickly to full polish, and If you’re worried about the falsetto, relax. It’s still sharp and never embarrassing. Certainly a younger Barry might have hit some of the bits higher and farther, but anyone judging this show on technical merit alone is completely missing the point.

Even though this was billed as a solo show, Barry can’t escape the profound ties to family this music conjures, and he embraced this by featuring his oldest son Stephen and his niece Samantha (Maurice’s daughter) in the band, and by the inclusion of lots of video of the brothers including virtual performances by Robin. Near the end of the show he gave a brief meditation on his brothers that, while not revealing, was heartfelt and emotional.

I never got to see the Bee Gees perform as a group, and I am very glad to have had this opportunity to attend an event that felt at once like a celebration and a devotion. The Philadelphia location, a bit far from my usual haunts, added for me a sense of pilgrimage. I hope to have the chance to see Barry Gibb again, but if I don’t, my applause, delight, prayers and good wishes for the entire Gibbs clan were well expressed on Monday night in Philly.

Lineage:
Stealth recorded and minimally produced by mrsaureus, being shared for the first time. Sitting on the floor about 25 feet from the stage, right of center using Core-Sound High End Binaurals (DPA-4060 capsules) to Sony PCM-M10 (48 kHZ, 24 bit), WavePad Sound Editor to chop and convert to 44.1 kHz, 16 bit FLAC. This is an audience recording that aims to document the experience of being in the crowd at the show, and features occasionally loud but appropriate crowd noise.
