NEIL YOUNG
With Booker T And The MGs
Dream Machine [Crystal Cat CC 331-332, 2CD]
Live at the Ahoy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; July 5, 1993. Very good audience recording.
In 1993, Neil Young collaborated with Booker T and the MGs for a summer tour of Europe and North America, with Blues Traveler, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam also on the bill. Some European shows ended with a rendition of Rockin’ In The Free World played with Pearl Jam, foreshadowing their eventual full-scale collaboration two years later. - wikipedia
Robert Johnson posted the following at mysanantonio.com:
Maybe one of the strangest, and potentially most perilous, of his undertakings came in 1993, when [Booker T] and the MGs hooked up with Neil Young for a nationwide tour. To say this was greeted as a bad fit would be an understatement. Rock writers were sure this was going to end badly… Young, after some bizarre genre-hopping in the ’80s (from electronic music to rockabilly to country to blues), had spent the last few years careening from feedback-drenched records and tours with Crazy Horse to acoustic work with the “Harvest Moon” and “Unplugged” albums… Anyway, the detractors turned out to be wrong. Way wrong…
The Booker T show was pretty much everything a Young fan would want - a career-spanning effort that began with Buffalo Springfield’s “Mr Soul,” traveled through the likes of “The Loner”… and “Like A Hurricane” and touched upon the best of Young’s more recent work (“Rockin’ In The Free World,” “Harvest Moon.” ) It didn’t hurt to have one of the greatest backing bands of all time, either. Besides Jones, the band included legendary guitarist Steve Cropper and veteran session players Donald “Duck” Dunn (bass) and Jim Keltner (drums). If I remember correctly, Young played well with the rest of the guys rather than going off the guitar-freakout deep end like he had done with Crazy Horse two years earlier.
Houston Chronicle critic Marty Racine, who saw the show… in Houston, was also impressed. Praising the Cropper/Young guitar interplay, he wrote, “Due to a restless muse and a repertoire three decades long, Young’s oldest music sounded ever poignant. And thanks to his able backup, the songs were served well. In the land of Noise, that combination made the loudest impact of all.”
