PAUL BLEY, GARY PEACOCK, PAUL MOTIAN
Essen 1999 [no label, 1CD]
Live at the Satiricon Theater, Essen, Germany; March 15, 1999. Very good FM broadcast.
In 1999, jazz pianist Paul Bley released Not Two, Not One with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian. Steve Loewy reviewed the album at allmusic.com: “Bley is especially effective exploring the lower sonorities, while Peacock’s full-sounding bass throbs with joy. Motian is characteristically exquisite, his soft, layered, sensitive strokes prodding his colleagues. None of the pieces drift, as these three masters contribute a mature perspective that comes from varied experience. Remarkable interplay, chamber-free harmonies, and loose improvisations add up to some special sounds.”
