JOE SAMPLE R.I.P. 1939-2014
Joe Sample, who became a jazz star in the 1960s as the pianist with the Jazz Crusaders and an even bigger star a decade later when he began playing electric keyboards and the group simplified its name to the Crusaders, died on September 12, 2014 in Houston. He was 75. The cause was mesothelioma (cancer of the lungs), said his manager, Patrick Rains. Among the albums on which his keyboard work can be heard are Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Tina Turner’s Private Dancer, Steely Dan’s Aja and Gaucho, and several recordings by BB King.

LEGENDS
(Marcus Miller, Eric Clapton, David Sanborn, Joe Sample, Steve Gadd)
Vitoria 1997 [no label, 1CD]
Live at the Gastiez Jazz Festival, Vitoria, Spain; July 17, 1997. Excellent soundboard. Incomplete show.
Thanks to original uploader geetarz; and to goody for sharing the tracks at Dime.
Goody’s notes:
Looking for some Joe Sample to upload today in memory and celebration of his passing this past Friday in Houston, I came across this show, shared here in 2010 by geetarz (thank you very much!)…
This is a pristine, stellar recording and performance by an appropriately-named and short-lived group put together by Marcus Miller, who must’ve been having quite a nice time playing together from the sound of things here. It’s an interesting blend of musical styles and sources which should bring in a wide assortment of admirers of all these “Living Legends” here to check it out. I know you’ll find something to enjoy in this great (put most likely incomplete) presentation.
