MARIAN McPARTLAND AND CECIL TAYLOR
Piano Jazz 1986 [no label, 1CD]

NPR Radio studio, New York, NY. NPR Radio broadcast 1986. Very good stereo broadcast. Slight hiss.

Sounds like a crash course in free or experimental jazz.

Thanks to Chip Stern for sharing these tracks.

Chip noted:

Very rare (took me a couple of years to find this). A special episode of the elegant Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz, featuring Cecil Taylor. They converse and improvise together, and Marian is down for Cecil’s abstraction. She has a gas! THEY HAVE A GAS!  Special encounter.

I’ve interviewed Cecil a number of times over the years… hell, I sold and installed a stereo system in his old loft in downtown Manhattan, like 30 years ago. I like Cecil very much. He is a daring, visionary, uncompromising artist. He can be quite charming and engaging. Marian charmed him to within an inch of his life, both as a host, an interviewer, a colleague and a fellow pianist. Their duets were really fascinating.
