JOSHUA REDMAN TRIO
Boston 2014 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Sculler’s, Allston, Boston, MA; October 24, 2014. Excellent WGBH-HD-FM broadcast.

In June 2014, Joshua Redman released Trios Live, recorded in New York and Washington DC with two different trios, which includes interpretations of Kurt Weill, Led Zeppelin and Thelonious Monk songs. To support the album, the trio is touring the US between September 29 and November 21.

The New York Times music critic Nate Chinen, in his review of the trio’s set at the Village Vanguard, runs through some of “the attributes that have kept Joshua Redman within a rare tier of jazz prominence for the last 20 years” - “warmly agreeable sound on tenor saxophone,” “brisk fluency on the instrument,” “energetic composure as a bandleader,” “articulate grace as a composer and arranger” - before settling on the “diligence, sensitivity and a kind of implicit trust” with his audience that helps set the saxophonist apart from his peers.

And at the Vanguard, says Chinen, the crowd “locked into his frequency immediately,” from the first track, “Hutchhiker’s Guide,” which “established a baseline spirit of joy” for the evening, through the final notes of the trio’s take on Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean.”

“The dimensions of the band’s sound had carried beautifully through the room,” Chinen concludes, “but at that moment, it could have slayed on a subway platform, with the same hollering response.”
