The New Basement Tapes [no label, 2CD]
Live at the Montalban Theater, Los Angeles, CA; November 13, 2014. Good audience recording; a bit distant, slight echo.
In the light of Bob Dylan’s The Basement Tapes Complete, which was released on November 4, here is a sort-of companion album.
Randy Lewis of the Los Angeles Times wrote:
How do you bring together five musicians, each with significant catalogs of their own, and put them on the same stage without a hint of raging ego or argument over who gets the spotlight?
Easy. Just throw them some vintage, unreleased Bob Dylan songs to belatedly bring to the world.
That’s what happened Thursday [Nov 13] at the Montalban Theatre in Hollywood for the first and perhaps only concert appearance by the New Basement Tapes band, which includes Elvis Costello, Mumford & Sons’ Marcus Mumford, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Rhiannon Giddens and Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith. The ad-hoc ensemble assembled by producer T Bone Burnett just released “Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes,” an album consisting of newly completed songs set to lyrics Dylan wrote circa 1967 and stashed away until recently.
In an interview, Burnett explained: “What transpired during those two weeks was amazing for all of us. There was a deep well of generosity and support in the studio at all times, which reflected the tremendous trust and generosity shown by Bob in sharing these lyrics with us in the first place.” And, as writer Randy Lewis noted, the camaraderie and mood of generosity was apparent throughout Thursday’s nearly two-hour show, which Jim James said, “We didn’t know about until a day and a half ago.”
Thanks to Bacharach for sharing the show at Dime.
Bacharach noted:
Card Shark is performed unamplified. The alternate versions of Down On The Bottom and Florida Key do not appear on the Lost On The River album.
Lineage:
Zoom H1 (internal mics) > WAV > Sound Studio (track splits, opening and closing fades) > xACT (FLAC conversion)
