JOHN ZORN’S MASADA
Bremen 1994 [TomP Remaster, 2CD]
Live at Jazzclub KITO, Bremen, Germany; November 7, 1994. Very good FM and satellite broadcasts.
Masada is a musical group (”to produce a sort of radical Jewish music”) with rotating personnel led by American saxophonist and composer John Zorn since the early 1990s. Masada is as much a “songbook” as a group, comprising more than 500 relatively brief compositions. Each song is written in accordance with a number of rules, including the maximum number of staves, the modes or scales that are used, and the fact that the songs must be playable by any small group of instruments .”The idea is to put Ornette Coleman and the Jewish scales together”… One of Zorn’s most active Masada projects of recent years is Electric Masada - reminiscent of jazz fusion and noise rock. - wikipedia
Thanks to blackforest; Lewojazz and to tom_phillips (TomP) for sharing the tracks at Dime.
Thanks also to fastone for the artwork.
TomP noted:
Blackforest posted his claimed upgrade to the alternate cassette source, but it did not sound as good until I realised that the channel phase was inverted and when fixed, confirmed it was really an upgrade, so with his agreement, I did my usual extra editing and V1 is a really fine complete concert, with much better stereo image, separation of instruments and real attack to the drums, whilst the highlight for me is being able to hear the woody thrum to Greg Cohen’s great deep bass playing.
Lewojazz has since captured an excellent clean digital NWR recording of over 50 per cent of the concert, so now you have a V2 remaster that uses this better source. I also spotted additional small glitches in all the remaining V1 tracks, so I corrected these as the tracks were changed anyway to add flac tags.
