Live at the Aladdin Hotel, Las Vegas, NV; 1979. Very good audience recording.
There aren’t that many Ricky (Garden Party) Nelson boots circulating and this is a nice one. The presence of “Merry Christmas Baby” places the show in/around December 1979. Nelson was 45 when he died in a plane crash in 1985.

If it hadn’t been for fickle fate, there would have been at least one more. Ricky Nelson was scheduled to play Jonathan Swift’s in Harvard Square. I was going with a couple of buddies. Swift’s was a place I considered one of [the] ‘stomping grounds’ back in my frenzied tapin’ days. I recorded a lotta shows there, and (to paraphrase Jules [talking about foot massages] in Pulp Fiction) ‘Had my technique down and everything,’ so I was loaded for bear and expecting nothing but great results.
Can’t remember the exact date, but it must’ve been December ‘cuz I remember we stopped at a Xmas party near my house for a quick couple of drinks before heading over to Cambridge. The other thing I remember is that it was fu¢#n’ freezing cold, we were suffering in even the short walk from the car to the club. But I was primed and ready to exploit the living bejeezus out of Ricky Nelson, and up we trod… only to find a notice scotch-taped to the front door saying the show was canceled because Ricky Nelson’s plane had problems and he couldn’t get to Boston. We were bummed, but I figured We’ll catch him next time.
A few weeks later his plane actually crashed. No next time…
