MUNGO JERRY
Brooklyn 2013 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, NY; August 4, 2013. Very good audience recording.

To any casual listener, Mungo Jerry (namely frontman Ray Dorset) were a one-hit wonder. Right from the beginning, just before Let ‘Er Roll, Dorset scats the opening of In The Summertime and admits, “Despicable me!” and, throughout the show, teases the crowd with snatches of the song. In The Summertime notwitstanding, listeners will find that Dorset is indeed a fine bluesman - as this performance will show. Have a good time y’all. For those whose memory is a bit rusty, Mungo Jerry also had hits with Lady Rose and Baby Jump.

ofap1 recalls Dorset’s appearance at the Festival in 1970:

Ray Dorset put this unknown jug band together and was hired to play between main sets as fill-in at The Hollywood Festival, Newcastle-Under-Lyme over the Bank Holiday weekend May 1970. The stuff was so good (memory has returned over the years!!) that they played a number of times over the weekend and rapidly became one of the highlights. Summertime was played many times and each met with riotous behaviour - barrier fences smashed down in time to the music. No one seemed to mind. From complete unknowns Summertime became a smash hit and a soundtrack to that summer.

Thanks to Manofz (zmanatl) who recorded and shared the show at Dime.
