Normally, one does not expect any tension in a Burt Bacharach show. But the tension on stage is probably unintentional though palpable - every one is concerned that something might just happen to the 87-year-old master tunesmith.
As The Guardian pointed out, there was little to dislike about Bacharach’s performance (it was a career-spanning set, which was what fans expected): the sun was blazing, the picnic carpets were covered in lazy-limbed families who’d plonked themselves down for the rest of the day, bathing in the romantic, rose-tinted glow of the easy-listening king.
Watched by the likes of Paloma Faith, Adele, Will Young and Daisy Lowe, the master songwriter lost some of the audience in the smulchy, lounge section at the end, but if there was one thing Saturday afternoon at this festival needed, it was some sweet familiarity before Kanye polarised the Pyramid stage.
