BOB DYLAN
Seattle 1974 [JEMS Archive, 1CD]
Live at the Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle, WA; February 9, 1974 (Afternoon Show, Dylan set only - lineup included The Band). Fairly to very good audience recording. A bit distant with slight echo but still clear. Considered an upgrade to existing versions.
Thanks to the taper; JEMS; and mjk5510 for sharing the show at Dime.
Known Faults:
- All Along The Watchtower: 9 seconds patched with source 1
- Like A Rolling Stone: Last 2:53 patched with source 1
- Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine): recorder source 1
SG of JEMS recorded four shows on Dylan and the Band’s 1974 tour, the afternoon and evening shows in Seattle and Oakland. Those cassette masters have long been stored in a box along with two reel to reels marked “Seattle 2/9/74 aft and eve.” I long presumed the reels to be safety copies of SG’s cassette masters. But when going through other tapes in the box, I decided to thread up the reels just to make sure and, low and behold, the reels were not copies but instead alternate and superior recordings.
I asked SG if he could recall anything about the tapes, wondering if perhaps they were done by Dave & Donn, Seattle taping contemporaries of SG, some of whose excellent work JEMS released on DIME several years ago. SG was fairly confident the reels didn’t come from them but couldn’t remember their provenance.
What we can say is that the reels contain very good recordings; I consider them candidates for the upper third quality spectrum of ‘74 tour audies, clearer, closer and fuller than most, with very little audience noise. As is the case with many copies of ‘74 tour shows, The Band’s standalone performances were edited out.
The reel source ends during “Like A Rolling Stone” (I’m guessing battery failure), so we’ve patched the end of the show (and a missing bit in “Watchtower”) from JEMS’s master cassettes to present the complete Seattle afternoon show in what we believe (based on the information gleaned from Lossless Bob about extant sources) to be the best quality available to date.
Thanks to WG for returning the box that contained these reels, SG for covering the ‘74 tour so thoroughly and to mjk5510 who did the final assembly and packaging to get it ready for you.
Lastly, please send your thoughts and prayers to J, the cornerstone of Team JEMS. He’s had a setback in his battle against cancer and we want him to overcome as he has so many times before. We love you, J. Get better.
