THE NEW BARBARIANS
Breathe On Me [BGC 1993-3, 2CD]
Live at the Riverfront Coliseum, Cincinnati, Ohio; May 3, 1979. Very good mono soundboard.
wikipedia:
The New Barbarians played two concerts in Canada and 18 shows across the United States in April and May 1979. In August 1979, the band also supported Led Zeppelin at the Knebworth Festival 1979. The group was formed and led by Rolling Stones and Faces guitarist Ronnie Wood, primarily to promote his latest LP, Gimme Some Neck. The lineup included Rolling Stones member Keith Richards, bassist Stanley Clarke, former Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan, Rolling Stones confederate and saxophonist Bobby Keys and drummer Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste of The Meters. For the Knebworth show Clarke was replaced on short notice by bassist Phillip Chen, who had to learn all the songs in one day. In October 2006 Ronnie Wood’s record label, Wooden Records, released a two-disc CD (followed a few months later by a triple LP set) of a New Barbarians concert at the (now former) Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, entitled Buried Alive: Live in Maryland.
gsparaco, collectorsmusicreviews.com:
The New Barbarians are the most interesting and fun of all the Rolling Stones side projects. Although centered on Ron Wood and his third solo album Gimme Some Neck, it was more than an exercise of ego or obligation. It was a chance for Wood to flex his creativity and to have fun doing it. The album was critically praised and the short tour well received. The sound quality [on this show] is excellent. The instruments are perfectly balanced and it has nice depth and presence. The audience sounds very far away, however, and there is a cut in “Breath On Me.” Despite the minor imperfections this is a nice recording to have. The band are much tighter than in other shows and were not trying to be the sloppy drunk party band they’re usually labeled. The tape comes to an end with “Come To Realize.” It’s a shame the rest is missing because this is one of the strongest nights of the tour and it would have been great to hear the epic “I Am Grooving You” and “Seven Days” with this kind of enthusiasm.
