Before Mel B or Mel C (of the Spice Girls) came onto the scene, the only Mel was American singer-songwriter Melanie (full name, Melanie Anne Safka-Schekeryk). Melanie created a stir at Woodstock in 1969 and cemented her reputation with hits such as What Have They Done To My Song, Ma; Brand New Key; Ruby Tuesday; and Lay Down (Candles in the Rain).

Melanie signed to Columbia Records in 1967. Her debut single, “Beautiful People” was a hit in the Netherlands. Her song “Bobo’s Party” was a #1 hit in France in 1969. Her debut album received rave reviews from Billboard which heralded her voice as “wise beyond her years” and her non-conformist approach to the selections on this LP made her a new talent to be reckoned with. Melanie (later) left Columbia Records for Buddah Records. On this tape there were two BBC broadcasts. I wanted to keep them both together in the same post. Melanie had performed at Woodstock only three weeks earlier. By 1975, Melanie had returned to the BBC to perform a full set of songs. Thanks to BR for the tape.
