On August 24, 2015 it was reported that the Malaysian police might expand their anti-riot arsenal to include taser guns for this weekend’s Bersih 4 rally if the situation warrants it. Bersih (Clean) has setup five points for Malaysians to gather before heading to Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square): Sogo, Pasar Seni, Dataran Maybank, Brickfields and the National Mosque. Starting time is 2 pm on August 29 and 30. Malaysia’s Independence Day falls on August 31.

But on August 25, the deputy inspector-general of police, Noor Rashid Ibrahim, backtracked and said taser guns will not be used this week. Kuala Lumpur City police chief Tajuddin Md Isa said police have denied the request for the organisers to hold the rally in the Dataran Merdeka area.

The Bersih 4 rally will be carried out in major cities in Malaysia, namely, Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and Kuching in Sarawak. The rallies are organised by The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections or Bersih, which seeks to reform the current electoral system to ensure free, clean and fair elections. The rally organisers hope a good turnout will force the resignation of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak who has scandalised Malaysia with the revelation that he received RM2.6 billion in “donations” into his bank account from a Saudi donor.

At the same time, Malaysians are staging Bersih 4 rallies on their own around the world, namely, Australia (Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne); Brazil (Rio De Janeiro); Canada; Columbia; China; France; Germany; Hong Kong; Ireland; Indonesia; Japan; Jordan; New Zealand; the Phillipines; Scotland; South Korea; Sweden; Switzerland; Taiwan; Thailand; England and the United States. No rallies will be organised in $ingapore. Those who are interested in joining the event in Kuala Lumpur can try to go to the rally using Bersih 4 buses (click here).

While not everyone can attend the Bersih 4 rallies, this Patti Smith show might be used as a rally soundtrack.

Through most of the 1980s, Patti Smith was in semi-retirement from music. In 1988, she released Dream of Life, which included the song “People Have the Power”. Her husband, Fred Smith, died in November 1994 of a heart attack. Shortly afterward, Patti faced the unexpected death of her brother Todd. After the impact of these deaths, her friends Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and Allen Ginsberg urged her to go back out on the road. She toured briefly with Bob Dylan in December 1995.
