London 1985 [JEMS master, 2CD]
Live at the Hammersmith Palais Ballroom, London, UK; October 28, 1985. Very good audience recording.
Here is a relatively early R.E.M. show. In June 1985, the group had released their third album, Fables Of Reconstruction.

“weedwacker67″ (source of probably four or five shelves’ worth of CDs in my collection) brought this torrent to Dime in December 2010, as part of their ongoing project of digitizing decades of analog masters. Fortunately for R.E.M. collectors, JEMS was in London to record Pete Townshend’s “Deep End” shows a couple of nights later, and added on this R.E.M. date while in town. The performance itself is very good - the main set features a good cross-section of their material (throughout the I.R.S. years, I thought their setlists were more representative of their full catalog; after they left for a major label, it seemed like their setlists were very skewed toward the newer, more radio-friendly songs) - as frequently happened on this tour, the encore turns into a crazy collection of covers and outtakes, with originals by Aerosmith, Golden Earring, and Tom Jones breaking into the set. If you are an R.E.M. fan who doesn’t have this one, you will probably find it to be worth the bandwidth.
The sound quality is really good considering the era and equipment used - in fact, I’d be quite happy to produce a master like this on the equipment I own 29 years later. Full dynamic range, good mix, minimal crowd interference, and an overall rich live sound. I’m not sure how much work went into processing this recording, but it should be worthwhile even for non-bootleg collectors who aren’t accustomed to adjusting their expectations for amateur (i.e. non-commercial) recordings.
