ELECTRIC FLAG
Featuring Erma Franklin
San Francisco 1968 [TomP Remaster, 1CD]
Live at the Carousel Ballroom, San Francisco, CA; April 21, 1968. Very good to excellent stereo soundboard.
This is one of those seminal recordings.
Erma Franklin is sister to the well-known Aretha. Erma’s career for Shout! Records resulted in several single releases in 1967 including Big Boss Man and her take of Piece Of My Heart, which Janis Joplin defined as her stomping ground. This recording was made when Erma took the stage at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco for three nights in April from 19 to 21, 1968. Backing her was Mike Bloomfield’s Electric Flag, a blues rock group.
In 2008, we shared a version of this show (click here). Click here for the write-up.
In June 2015, Rockbeat Records put out a fresh bootleg of the show.
Thanks to TomP (tom_phillips) who remastered the new disc and shared the tracks at Dime.
TomP noted:
Having downloaded four or five versions of very varying sound quality, I was delighted when this great sounding bootleg appeared on Amazon. It is a legacy recording that had variations typical of those made in this era at the Carousel/Matrix/Fillmore, which were just time consuming rather than difficult, so I hope folks appreciate this great music.
