NIGHTFOOD
Including Bob Weir, Jaco Pastorius and Brian Melvin
San Francisco 1986 [no label, 2CD]
Live at The Stone, San Francisco, CA; September 21, 1986. Generally very good soundboard.
Thanks to rumrunners for sharing this at Lossless Legs… where the “fun” really began when Bob Weir joined in.
Sleeve notes:
The show I’m offering up is fairly rare. If you have a Weirbase, you’ll see only a few shows with this lineup in the early fall of ‘86 (whilst Jerry was recovering from his coma, and Weir I think was getting back into the swing after he broke his arm, though I think he had use of it by this show).
Anyway, this is pretty good quality - probably the best that is out there for this show/band, though it is derived from an analog source, and does have some limitations. (It is mostly soundboard, though a couple cuts seem to be audience. It fully fills up two discs, so it is mostly in chronological order, but a couple of songs might’ve been switched to fit it all on two discs with no cuts.)
It was put together and cleaned up by a major Jaco fan. Jaco had just been discharged from a psych hospital the week before and was just getting back into the swing of things as well. The group, Nightfood, is led by drummer Brian Melvin. They recorded an album, “Brian Melvin’s Nightfood,” that has both Jaco and Weir on it together for a few cuts. Jaco died about a year later. [Pastorius died on September 1, 1967; exactly one year later.]

Those interested might want to track down the Night Food album from 1985 (not 1988’s Nightfood), where a reviewer wrote that “Pastorius’ important role on Night Food is one of discipline. His frequently restrained playing actually embellishes the compositions…”
