PROCOL HARUM
San Francisco 1977 [no label, 3CD]

Live at the Old Waldorf, San Francisco, CA; April 8, 1977 (early and late shows). Very good audience recordings.

Thanks to kneesfudd for sharing these tracks at Dime.

kneesfudd added: “It really doesn’t speak well of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that these guys haven’t been inducted yet. They’ve been in mine for 44 years and it’d be longer but they didn’t hit my radar until about 1970 other than the big hit. Pretty damn impressive repertoire of material.”

Early Show notes (by kneesfudd):
- Very fine audience in small club (with some overload in this show only).
- Warts: Some distortion in loud passages where taper must have had levels too hot (this show only). #8 cuts and #9 starts late at tapeflip. Could use a bit of treble push in my opinion. Surely missed some dropouts but tapes were in good shape.

Late Show notes:
Could use a bit of treble push in my opinion. Surely missed some dropouts but tapes were in good shape. Tapeflip between 7 and 8 (no music missing).

ART BLAKEY AND HIS ORGIES IN RHYTHM
With Tony Williams
Munich 1972 [no label, 1CD]

Jazz Now Festival, live at the Deutsches Museum, Kongress-Saal, Munich, West Germany; August 18, 1972. Very good soundboard.

Two drummers - the old and the new - Art Blakey and Tony Williams. Think bebop drummers and you think of Kenny Clarke, Max Roach and Art Blakey; and Blakey’s Jazz Messengers was a place where musicians cut their teeth and cement their reputation. After all, the Messengers included, at one time or another, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard. In the early to mid-’60s, Tony Williams was already regarded a key member of the avant-garde movement. By 1972, he was already championing fusion-rock through The Tony Williams Lifetime, with John McLaughlin. At the time of this show, Art Blakey could be considered “old school” as opposed to the more “experimental” Tony Williams. [Also bear in mind that Miles Davis’ In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew came out between 1969 and 1970 and what Miles was doing was definitely not going unnoticed.]

The music here rather recalls Miles’ On The Corner; with the Blakey-Williams interplay [more interesting if this was a “sparring” contest] more pronounced on the track, Virginia, but overall, no fireworks - it’s really easy on the ears and everyone is generously alloted their time and space in the spotlight. And Ray Bryant’s percussive Cubano Chant adds a bit of world music long before the term became fashionable. As historic meetings go, this should not be missed. Only wish there was more fire and brimstone.

MARIA MULDAUR
New Haven 1972 [no label, 2CD]

Live at the Sprague Hall, Yale University, New Haven, CT; December 2, 1972 (not December 12 as originally circulated). Very good soundboard.

I think it’s been an amazing journey and its unfolded one passion at a time, and I just followed where my passion has led me and it hasn’t stirred me wrong yet, Even though I’ve had a few huge Pop hits, but basically my career can be described as a long and adventurous odyssey through various forms of American roots. I started out falling in love with Appalachian “Old Timey” music and country blues, bluegrass, jazz, and all sorts of music and, at various stages as the mood lent me, I began to explore different genres… and continuing to do that. It’s been fascinating; we have such an amazing, rich, musical heritage in this country and it’s something I never get tired of exploring. - Maria Muldaur, 2012

Here is Maria Muldaur, opening for Bonnie Raitt (perhaps explaining the bluesy feel of the show). Given that the setlist for both the Early and Late shows is identical, casual listeners and those curious might want to start with the Late Show as it includes pianist Lou Terriciano.

From folk to blues to the Grateful Dead… that’s the First Lady of American Roots Music for you.

Thanks to Stu for sharing the tracks back in 2005; and to ecocats and others who are still keeping the shows alive at Lossless Legs and Dime.

THE NICE
Belgium 1969 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Actuel Festival, Amougies, Belgium; October 26, 1969. Fair to good mono audience recording.

The Nice were an English progressive rock band from the 1960s, known for their blend of rock, jazz and classical music. Their debut album, The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack was released in 1968 to immediate acclaim. The Nice are also a forerunner of the much more widely known Emerson, Lake & Palmer. - wikipedia

Thanks to taper JJB; the person who shared this on the net in 2006; and to hendrixsky and uninvited94 for keeping the show alive at Dime and The Traders’ Den.

Original notes:

This is a typical set for the period (a mixture of original compositions, folk covers and classical/rock fusions), but shows the trio at their most energetic. There are obvious issues with the sound quality - the tape recorder used was way below modern standards and the sound is nowhere near “professional” quality. This reservation aside, however, this is simply an unbelievable document of a legendary festival, and so our heartfelt thanks to the taper, JJB, for recording this at the time… I hope the setlist below is accurate; corrections welcome!

RICK DERRINGER
Chicago 1979 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the International Ampitheatre, Chicago, IL; December 28, 1979. Very good FM broadcast.

From the bubblegum hit, Hang On Sloopy, to performing with Edgar and Johnny Winter; Todd Rundgren and Steely Dan, as well as being a solo artiste, guitarist Rick Derringer has certainly carved a wide swathe of rock for himself. And as if he couldn’t go more leftfield, there was Patti Smith providing the lyrics for Hold (on All American Boy, 1973). Here, he was touring behind the Guitars And Women album.

Thanks to john e lee; and to mr breeze for sharing the tracks at The Traders’ Den.

mr breeze’s notes:

Here’s another master FM tape from the archives of john e lee. It is unknown what type of equipment was used to record the initial live broadcast on WLUP the Loop, Chicago’s rock station. it has a good mix and high energy. You’ll hear whistles, people cheering, REO chants [REO Speedwagon were the opening band], as well Rick cursing. If this was ever rebroadcast, then the censors would have likely removed his very vocal f-bomb. There is some static here and there but it does not detract from the show.

Cover posted at soundaboard.blogspot - Thanks!

HOYT AXTON
San Jose 1982 [no label, 2CD]

Live at The Saddle Rack, San Jose, CA; July 19, 1982. Excellent “The Fat Fry” pre-broadcast.

Singer-songwriter and actor Hoyt Axton is probably one of those who songs are more well-known than him. Joy To The World and Never Been To Spain (Three Dog Night); The Pusher and Snowblind Friend (Steppenwolf); No-No Song (Ringo Starr) and Greenback Dollar (Kingston Trio) are the more notable ones. [Even earlier, Hoyt’s mother, Mae Boren Axton, had co-written Heartbreak Hotel, which Elvis Presley made famous.]

On TV, Hoyt appeared on Bonanza; WKRP In Cincinnati; The Bionic Woman; Dukes Of Hazzard; McCloud and even I Dream of Jeannie. His movies included The Black Stallion; Heart Like A Wheel and Gremlins. Hoyt died of a heart attack in Victor, Montana, on October 26, 1999, at the age of 61, after suffering a severe heart attack two weeks earlier. File this under folk/country, Americana or even Alternate Country.

RASPBERRIES
Onenight Sensations [Starrcade, 4CD]

Disc 1 - Live at the Public Hall, Cleveland, OH; 1973. Good to fairly good audience recording. Disc 2 - Live at The Agora Theatre, Cleveland, OH; July 15, 1974. Fairly to very good FM broadcast. Disc 3 - Nightside Studio Party; February 1973(?). Fairly to very good Armed Forces Network radio broadcast. Disc 4 - Don Kirschner Rock Concert 1973 and 1974. Fairly to very good TV broadcast.

The “boyband” of the day (circa early ’70s), The Raspberries, from Cleveland, Ohio, were seen by some as “uncool”, especially next to the British Invasion bands such as The Beatles, The Who, The Hollies and the Small Faces, they still managed to hold their own with their brand of power pop. But as Miket posted at boatagainstthecurrent.blogspot: “The boys started with some chords from The Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride” before ripping into their high-energy hymn to teenage lust, “I Wanna Be With You”… This time, in the same performance venue that had launched The Beatles’ invasion of America in earnest in February 1964, Carmen and Co. were, in effect, giving the finger to the critical powers that be by invoking the memory of the British musicians that had transformed their lives.”

Singer-guitarist Eric Carmen went on to a successful solo career, especially with his hit, All By Myself, after the band broke up in 1975.

Today, Max Weinberg, of the E Street Band, has acknowledged Raspberries drummer Michael McBride’s influence on his playing on the Darkness album; and, according to the wiki, Paul Stanley of Kiss, Tom Petty, and Axl Rose of Guns n’ Roses have all also cited the Raspberries as an influence in their songwriting.

MILES DAVIS SEPTET
Cologne 1971 [no label, 1CD]

Live at the Sartory Festsaal, Cologne, Germany; November 12, 1971. Very good Westdeutscher Radio (WDR) radio broadcast.

After playing a lot of these white rock halls, I was starting to wonder why I shouldn’t be trying to get to young black kids with my music. They were into funk, music they could dance to. It took me a while to really get into the concept all the way… Jack DeJohnette left the group late in 1971, around the same time Keith Jarrett left. I wanted the drummer to play certain funk rhythms… I didn’t want the band playing totally free all the time, because I was moving closer to the funk groove in my head. - Miles: The Autobiography

FRANK SINATRA AND LIZA MINELLI
East Rutherford 1987 [VocalEaze VECD-0102, 1CD]

Live at the Byrne Meadowlands Arena, East Rutherford, NJ; December 5 and 6, 1987. Very good to excellent soundboard.

Before Sinatra sings My Way, he refers to the song’s writer as “that little Arab… what’s his name… Anka”. Apparently, Paul Anka is an Arab of Lebanese descent. Hard to tell whether the intent was derogatory but curious why Sinatra would refer to Anka in public as “that little Arab”.

Sinatra died in May 1998.

In April 2013, Paul Anka wrote his auto-biography, My Way. He wrote extensively about the late Frank Sinatra. Here are some excerpts:

The king of this playground was my idol Frank Sinatra, who’d been a big star since the Forties.  He was 25 years older than me, yet he and the rest of the Rat Pack adopted me, calling me Kid and including me in their japes…

Most of the time I knew Frank - our friendship would last decades - he had long-time girlfriends or wives, but he never seemed happy. He said once he didn’t understand women…

Though there was a side to Frank that I adored, he could be a difficult man, blunt to the point of rudeness. He’d fly into a rage if your hair was unruly or your clothes were scruffy… He once had some wannabe mobsters beat up two comedians just because they’d made fun of him…

MAFIA PROBE THAT INSPIRED HIS GREATEST SONG

In 1967, Frank Sinatra confided over dinner that he’d decided to retire. The Rat Pack was starting to splinter, which made him feel vulnerable, and he was being harassed by the FBI because of his Mob connections.

‘Kid, I’m fed up,’ he said. ‘I’m going to do one more album and I’m out of here.’

Then he lightened up and said: ‘Hey, kid, you never wrote me that song you always promised me. Don’t take too long!’ He’d often joshed with me about writing a song for him, but I’d never got round to it.

A few months later, at home in New York, I couldn’t sleep one night. So I sat at my piano and started playing a French song, Comme d’habitude, to which I’d bought the rights.

There was a storm brewing and as I played I suddenly sensed myself becoming Frank, tuning into his sense of foreboding. That’s how I got the first line: ‘And now the end is near, and so I face the final curtain.’

I thought of him leaving the stage, the lights going out, and started typing like a madman, writing it just the way he talked: ‘Ate it up… spit it out.’

I’d never before written something so chauvinistic, narcissistic, in-your-face and grandiose. Everything in that song was Sinatra. When I finished, it was 5 am. I knew Frank was in Las Vegas, but by then he’d be offstage and at the bar. I called: ‘Frank, I’ve got something interesting - I’m gonna bring it out.’

When I played the song for him, he said: ‘That’s kooky, kid. We’re going in.’ Coming from Mr Cool, that meant he was ecstatic. There was never any question of singing it myself; My Way was done Sinatra’s way - and that was unquestionably the right way.

Amsterdam 1973 [no label, 1CD]

Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; September 7, 1973. Very good to excellent FM broadcast.

Thanks to squareofnone for the fixes and for sharing the show at Dime.

squareofnone noted:

This is an excellent FM recording. There were some artifacts introduced by various transfers over the years that needed to be removed or repaired. Amplifying the left channel to match the right enhanced the stereo separation. It also helped bring Terry’s guitar to the forefront, a huge bonus in my opinion.

BOB DYLAN
Los Angeles 1978
The Lost and Found Mike the MICrophone Tapes Vol One [Mike Millard first gen via JEMS, 1CD]

Live at the Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, CA; June 1, 1978. Very good to excellent audience recording.

Thanks to Mike Millard for the recording; JEMS for the efforts; and to mjk5510 for sharing this at Dime.

Original notes:

JEMS is pleased to release the first in a series of recordings made by legendary taper Mike Millard, AKA Mike the MICrophone, best known for his masters of Led Zeppelin in and around LA circa 1975-77.

The 14 first-generation tapes (10 cassettes and four reels) were sent by Millard to SG, the beloved S in JEMS, in the mid-’80s after the pair had met in person in Orange County on two occasions. To the best of our knowledge, none of the eight shows (spanning the 14 tapes) has ever been attributed as a Millard recording. In fact, there are no extant references we are aware of to Millard ever recording Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen, the two artists captured on the tapes.

Several of the tapes we believe are uncirculated; others may be out there, but not credited as Millard’s work. Even those that turn out to be previously circulated (and there is at least one confirmed so far) will be released in this series from verified first-generation tapes made by Millard himself and marked/notated in his signature manner. As such, we expect all of them to be upgrades at a minimum and new sources in many cases.

At this point you might be asking yourself, “So if JEMS received these Millard tapes in the mid-’80s, why haven’t they circulated previously?” Fair question. And, in condensed form, here is the answer, which also provides the “Lost” portion of our series title:

Twenty-six years ago, Millard sent SG a box of tapes. I remember having it my hands in 1986 at SG’s house, right after it arrived in the mail. But that was the last time I ever saw the box. It disappeared. Nearly all of SG’s tapes have since been consolidated into the JEMS North archive, but we never found the box of Millard tapes. Over the years, my memory faded of what was in the box. I thought there were Springsteen shows, but that fuzzy notion was all I could recall.

Now to the “Found”: A few months ago, WG, a long-time collector friend of SG, contacted him and said, “I found a box of tapes of yours when I was moving furniture.” Sure enough it was the Millard tapes and more. Turns out WG borrowed the tapes and some other SG masters after a Dylan show in 1986 and the box wound up misplaced and forgotten about by both parties, only to be rediscovered 28 years later.

Once the box was returned, SG sent it to me at JEMS South where we proceeded to make fresh transfers of its contents.

If there’s any mildly disappointing element to this otherwise charming story, it is that none of the lost Millard tapes are of previously uncirculated shows; there are other recordings by other tapers of all of them. But the good news is the quality of most of them is indeed up to Millard’s legendary standards. There are some excellent pulls here and, in at least one case, Millard’s recording is more complete than the circulating source.

Our series opens with Dylan’s summer residency at the Universal Amphitheatre in June 1978. This recording is of the opening night of the run, but the tape is incomplete. Millard’s notes state: “Missed first half of concert. Only recorded from intermission on.”

But what Millard did record is, to my ears, awfully good. I haven’t compared it to the two other known recordings (per Lossless Bob) of this show, but it is hard to imagine they could top this. The notes don’t confirm Millard’s infamous wheelchair taping set up, but they do confirm exactly what microphones were used (AKG 451E with CK-1 capsules) and his familiar Nakamichi 550 recorder. Interestingly, at another show in this run, Millard used a completely different set of gear, but we’ll get to that when the time comes.

Millard’s notes also famously warn the recipient, “This tape has been electronically coded. If this recording is reproduced and falls into the wrong hands I will know where the original source came from. Please do not reproduced (sic) this tape.” Sadly, we can’t request Millard’s permission, given his untimely passing in 1990. But we hope enough time has passed that we can honor his work by sharing it in a manner he could have never dreamed would be possible three decades ago.

Here’s to Mike the MICrophone and to finding lost tapes.

PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS
Live In Newcastle 1973 - 41th Anniversary Edition [CMI Music, 1CD]

Live at the City Hall, Newcastle, UK; July 10, 1973. Good to very good soundboard.

Welcome to a labour of love… Thanks to CMI Music/lzepfan for the efforts and for sharing this at Dime.

CMI Music/lzepfan notes:

Unfortunately after 20 years since Unsurpassed Masters Vol 1 bootleg which features excerpts of this concert in FANTASTIC quality was released, this source has never reappeared in a complete form.

Here’s my attempt to create the most complete and listenable recording of this concert. One song from the set list, ‘Say You Don’t Mind’, is absent here, as there’s no known professional recording of this song available in the collector’s community, possibly it wasn’t featured in the mysterious Apple Acetate.

As I know there’s an audience recording of the whole show available but it’s impossible for me to find it.

I’ve chosen to work with the three most common sources. Source 1 and 3 were speed corrected and EQ-processed to improve the sound quality and to match Source 2 as much as possible. All sources were spliced together to receive seamless listening experience.

PINK FLOYD
Echoes From The Past (Platinum Edition) [Digital Reproductions DR 42675-4, 2CD]

Live at the Sports Arena, Los Angeles, CA; April 26, 1975. Very good to excellent audience recording.

Thanks to Mike Millard for the recording; and to the person who shared this at Dime.

Notes:

This torrent captures the entire master tape source (including mic checks by taper Mike Millard).

There are many Pink Floyd Roios out there. Most of them are audience recordings and pretty difficult to listen to. This one, however, has to be the best audience recording of an old Floyd show ever. This rivals the Boston Garden show for quality, IMHO. If your a Floyd fan, don’t miss this one!

The Digital Dan Review:

An incredible audience show from the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California on April 26, 1975. This is the complete master tape source, so complete that you here the taper testing the mics as the show starts. The sound is nothing short of astounding. Incredibly clear and quite devoid of almost any fan noise. The bass is well captured, deep and powerful with no distortion whatsoever. The highs are also very crisp and not the least bit of harshness. In other words, the mix is just about perfect as if it were a soundboard. I think I have a good idea who taped this show and it explains a lot. There are a few things that make this recording truly unique. First, the pre-release versions of Sheep (Raving And Drooling) and Dogs (You Gotta Be Crazy). Raving And Drooling is much different instrumentally during the jam sections than is the album version, including some rhythm guitar that sounds like disco-funk! The lyrics to You Gotta Be Crazy are quite different from the album version of Dogs. Even Roger calls it a rather “mean” song. “Any Colour You Like” is the great jam version and this is the last tour with performances of “Echoes” in its entirety. All and all this recording is absolutely amazing for its age and one that you will  definitely want in your collection.

We have previously shared the April 21, 1975 show (click here) and the June 17, 1975 show (click here).

FOAMFOOT
Crows From The Closet [Totonka, 1CD]

Live at The Troubador, West Hollywood, CA; January 8, 1994. Excellent soundboard.

This was an impromptu show featuring Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes); Marc Ford (The Black Crowes); Jimmy Ashhurst (The JuJu Hounds); Eric Bobo (Cypress Hill) and Andy Sturmer (Jellyfish).

Thanks to BZBeatle for sharing this on the net.

Bill Glahn, Live! Music Review:

OK, here’s a question for any legal eagle in our family of readers. A well-known band (in this case - The Black Crowes) performs under a false moniker at a small club. An astute bootlegger manages to get hold of an excellent soundboard recording of the show and puts it out under the fictitious name, never using the name “Black Crowes” anywhere in the artwork. The closest Totonka comes to using the band’s official name is the term “Crowes” (without “Black”) used in the liner notes. To my knowledge, “Foamfoot” is not a registered trademark and probably doesn’t appear anywhere in the band’s contract with their label.

So in essence, the bootlegger is not trading at all on the band’s likeness or image. Some great artwork in the William Stout tradition is used for the cover with no photos of the band in sight. Since trading on the “image and likeness” of an artist is at the foundation of US copyright law, is this a bootleg? To make matters more complicated, not one Black Crowes-penned tune is contained on this disc! So The Black Crowes are not even entitled to mechanical (songwriting) royalties (although quite a few others are).

This probably doesn’t matter anyhow, since Chris Robinson has expressed his love of bootlegs in no less than Rolling Stone magazine (even causing some nervousness in one store owner by naming his favorite shop to buy bootlegs!) But what if this were a Springsteen bootleg full of cover tunes (many to choose from) recorded previous to the times when the ticket sale became a contract with the “no taping” warnings? Could a company issue such a recording as “the Boss” with artwork of the kind that appeared on Whoopy Cat’s “Lost Radio Show” disc? This is one we’d love to see tested.

Back to Crows From The Closet - Chris Robinson announces that his basement is too small to rehearse in so the band wanted to practice in front of an audience. But the band doesn’t practice any of their own material, instead opting to place their own stamp on a variety of “classic rock” staples and a few long lost gems. And it all gets captured on a superbly mixed soundboard recording. You won’t find anything like this on any other Black Crowes bootleg. There’s even a few guest appearances.

The disc starts off with a version of Walk In My Shadow from Free’s “Tons of Sobs” (first) album, probably well known to our European readers but certainly out of the realm of over-played “classic-rock” tunes that fill the American airwaves. Afer Bottle Of Red Wine, fans finally get to hear Chris Robinson tackle a Steve Marriott tune with the Small Faces’ Tin Soldier. But Robinson picks a lower key than Marriott used so the similarities aren’t as startling as one might think (or hope for).

Actually, it’s on the songs that are the most stylistically removed from the Crowes’ brand of Southern rock ‘n’ soul that shine the most. While Marshall Tucker were considered a “Southern Rock” band, they were, in reality, much closer to today’s country/pop style. In the Crowes’ hands, Take The Highway comes across with a lot more bite, a great deal more groove. The extended dual lead guitar takes the song closer to Allmans-style jamming than Marshall Tucker ever got. The band is aided on this song by Gary Louris of the Jayhawks (mis-labeled on the back cover as Gary Lewis - yuchhhh.) Speaking of the Allmans, the band also romps through that band’s One Way Out.

The biggest surprise, however, is a take on the Band’s Jeremiah Surrender. The opening riff is so strong and forceful that I didn’t recognize the song until Robinson started singing. No attempt is made here to follow the original’s style. Where the song never seemed to fit in with the Band’s repertoire, the intoxicating guitar riff sounds tailor-made for the Crowes. It’s certainly an obscure choice for a band like the Crowes, but a very intelligent one. It’s obvious that these guys didn’t just borrow a sound - they developed it from a collector’s knowledge of the obscure and overlooked.

A second guest appearance takes place when David Crosby joins the band for a version of his own Long Time Gone. Other highlights include versions of the Grateful Dead’s Deal and Clapton’s Presence Of The Lord.

No date is given and the location is given simply as the Troubadour. This is not the secret show from last winter when the band performed as Blessed Chloroform at The Whiskey. The cover is a brilliant take-off on the Grateful Dead’s Skeletons From The Closet. Crows From The Closet is an all-around masterpiece in the best tradition of bootlegs.

Note: Bill Glahn was the editor of Live! Music Review. The above was published in August 1995. Since then, the date for the show has been identified.

THE ROLLING STONES
Love You Live Los Angeles [Dogs & Cats 049, 2CD]

Live at the Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, CA; July 9, 1975. Very good to excellent audience recording by Mike Millard.

Click here for the July 11, 1975 show (Mike Millard).

Before The Rolling Stones in 2012 deigned it fit to release only the July 13, 1975 show (LA Friday) as part of their bootleg series, Mike Millard’s tapes were generally regarded as the best for the 1975 Stones’ shows. Millard recorded from the audience all five concerts at the LA Forum on his trusty Nakamichi deck. It is likely that these 1975 shows were all recorded by the Stones.

Thanks to Erik Snow for sharing this at Hungercity in 2008; and to mr breeze for keeping it alive at The Traders’ Den.

Original notes:

One of the best recordings and performances from Tour Of The Americas 1975. Absolutely excellent show. Mike Millard is the taper of this one.

Compared to “LA Fog” (VGP), this DAC has a little more hiss - but also a but more punch and power (IMO). THere’s no BIG difference though… but I prefer the DAC release.

Note that “Sympathy For The Devil” was used for “Love You Live”, after editing and overdubbing.

ROXY MUSIC
Rehearsals 1982 [no label, 2CD]

The High Road world tour rehearsals, summer 1982. Excellent soundboard.

It’s interesting that The Spin Alternative Record Guide saw Roxy Music’s Avalon (1982) as “one of the all-time great makeout infernos, a synthesized version of Al Green’s Call Me, Van Morrison’s Moondance, and João Gilberto’s Amoroso.” For some, Avalon also saw the rise of Bryan Ferry (now, doesn’t he sound like David Bryne?) as a crooner, as opposed to an art-rock Roxy Music. Still, Andy Mackay’s saxophone remains haunting; and the album remains a favourite for many.

Thanks to original seeder sww1975 (Dime); and to overend for keeping the show alive at mindwarppavilion.

Original notes:

This is a real beauty! Check out this awesome stereo soundboard recording, which includes all the studio chat in between songs (you need to listen closely to hear it though!) and occasional false starts on songs too! It was only ‘Eight Miles High’ that never made it to the final setlist on this tour. ‘More Than This’ and ‘The Space Between’ was played only a handful of dates too. Track one has been left out, due to the fact that the ‘intro’ track was an official release, which had just basic instrument tuning and sound-checking over it.

Thanks also to stepeanut for the artwork.

Los Angeles 1977 [Mike Millard Master Tape/RMCH Remaster, 2CD]

Live at the Los Angeles Forum, Los Angeles, CA; September 23, 1977. Very good audience recording.

One more from the Mike Millard collection…

Thanks to floydart for the remastering efforts and for sharing the show at Dime.

Thanks also to SpammythePig for sharing the front cover.

Notes:

Other versions of this show have been posted… before. This is not a re-seed or re-hash of those, but an entirely new upgrade from the master tapes… On several occasions before he passed away, Millard let a close friend come to his residence and transfer a number of his masters to DAT while they were hanging out. This show is one of those master > DAT transfers.

This is Mike’s mint, raw master. Please note that it has not been equalized or remastered. Since I do not have any boots of this show, I cannot comment on how it compares to them. To me the sound quality is excellent, but as always, song samples are provided so that you can decide for yourself. As many of you already know, Millard’s recordings are known for their quality. Hope you enjoy this gem.

This is an RMCH Remaster that is not part of the PRRP series or the RMCH Series.

Lineage:

Remaster
- Boost deficient frequencies/EQ.
- Correct speed.
- Verify pitch correct.
- Correct phasing.
- Adjust stereo field and center sound.
- Correct inappropriate volume boosts *
- Correct auto-record level effects **
- Reduce audience contribution ***
- Repair many audible gaps and single channel dropouts
- Adjust dynamics
- Light noise reduction
- Re-track given 14 songs in 10 source files. ****

This remaster should be considered an upgrade to the PRRPSAE 05 version. More advanced software and techniques were used during this project. A great deal of time was devoted to repairing or removing as many clicks, pops and other tape errors as possible, using non-destructive techniques. The audience noise and loud claps were more extensively addressed in this version.
* 18 segments were found to have an abrupt, audible amplitude boost of 3-6dB. The volume of the sound and the hiss both clearly increased in these segments. These were corrected, eliminating this distraction.
** The recording system made frequent adjustments to record volume such as attenuation after a loud clap. These were corrected as much as possible.
*** The crowd was very enthusiastic that night. Frequently yells, loud claps and whistles were present during the songs. Where present, they were repaired or attenuated as much as possible. Most applause found between songs was left unaltered.
**** Remove redundant sections and track as continuous show.

BOB DYLAN
Live In Japan Vol 3 [Tarantura TCDBD-3-1/2, 2CD]

Live at the Budokan Dai-Hall, Tokyo, Japan; February 23, 1978. Very good audience recording by Terry Peach.

In the ’70s, while Mike Millard was wow-ing fans with his “field” recordings, Mr (Terry) Peach was doing the same in Japan. In fact, Mr Peach has also been referred to as the “Mike Millard of Japan”. Here is a 1978 Mr Peach show for your enjoyment and comparison, with the June 1978 Los Angeles show (click here).

gsparaco reviewed in 2012 at collectorsmusicreviews.com:

Bob Dylan always sought to reinterpret and rearrange his songs. But the 1978 Street Legal era remains one of the most interesting and radical. Although Dylan began the year with his first trip to Japan for 11 shows, the most recent releases from this year document the European and American shows from later in the year. Even the releases in the past decade documenting the Japan tour focus upon the Osaka and Tokyo shows from later in the tour. Dylan played the first three shows at Budokan in Tokyo. Audience tapes have been in circulation, but none have found their way onto any release. Tarantura have rectified the situation by releasing uncirculated Mr Peach tapes for these shows.

February 23 captures the third night in Budokan in excellent stereo with a minor tape flip in the middle. It is a good but nervous performance. Dylan himself sounds self-conscious and make several quips through the performance. Before “Love Minus Zero/No Limit,” commenting on a mistake in the lights, jokes “we left the light show home tonight” and after a sloppy “Like A Rolling Stone” he jokes “Thank you!  We almost played that one right.”

The show comes to grand finale with nice versions of “The Man In Me,” “Tomorrow Is A Long Time” and especially “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” using the flute set to a reggae beat. The set ends with “Forever Young” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” It is a very good, but not classic, performance. They are still trying to learn the new arrangements and have not yet introduced any new songs to the set.
