THE CARS
Toronto 1978 [no label, 1CD]
Live at the El Mocambo, Toronto, Canada; September 14, 1978. King Biscuit Flower Hour, aired on October 13, 1978. Excellent Pre-FM radio broadcast.
Ric Ocasek’s artful pop sounds drove The Cars, new wave’s fastest, most consistent success. Although the group initially got the critics’ nod for Ocasek’s cooly detached stance and the smoothly burnished keyboard-and-guitar-laced hooks, in retrospect, The Cars were essentially the new wave model of a Top 40 hit machine. That their oft-centre pop sensibility found expression in a series of original and frequently-aired music videos, especially You Might Think, made them, for a time, one of America’s top bands. - Rolling Stone
