JONI MITCHELL
Ithaca 1974 [no label, 2CD]
Live at Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; February 3, 1974. Fairly to very good audience recording.
On March 31, 2015, Joni Mitchell was found unconscious in her Los Angeles home. She regained consciousness in an ambulance on her way to hospital, but was taken to intensive care for tests. Mitchell suffers from a condition called “Morgellons syndrome,” a rare skin condition which prevents her from performing. “I can’t sing any more - don’t miss it. I can’t play any more - don’t miss it. I’ve got all these instruments laying around and hopefully one day I’ll pick them up,” she was quoted as saying. Morgellons is a controversial condition and is not recognised by mainstream medical authorities. Sufferers say it is characterised by crawling and stinging sensations under the skin but many in the medical community believe it is a psychiatric disorder.
Bill Henk on the 1974 Ithaca show:
Joni Mitchell is indeed a songstress of rare talent. She allows her listener an uncommon introspection into her own very personal life. Every song accurately reflects a very part of herself- a feeling, a mood, a retrospection. Each album becomes a veritable slice-of-life statement of her own reality, a self-portrait if you will. She shares with us her loves - and her losses. And we, as her listeners, are able to sympathize and identify her personal tragedies and triumphs with our own. Confiding in us as few other artists ever have, Joni Mitchell has - perhaps, consciously, but likely not - struck a rare and inseparable human bond between the performer (herself) and her public.
That heartwarming, joyous and ever so distinctive laugh of pleasure that seems to spring so easily from her beautiful lips only serves to make her even the more human and real. And thus we can begin to understand this talented songstress as she continually works her poetic sorcery, capturing human feelings and emotions in a way that only she can: “Caught in my struggle for higher achievement and my search for a love that doesn’t seem to cease” (The Same Situation). Those lines in particular caught my attention during the first half of her concert Sunday night. Fort he critical listener or avid fan there were, I’m sure, ever so many more.
