NICK MARSH R.I.P. 1962-2015

On June 5, 2015, singer-guitarist Nick Marsh of Flesh For Lulu died of cancer at the age of 53. Flesh for Lulu was a mix of the New York Dolls and Rolling Stones, with gothic rock’s gloomy atmosphere and aesthetics, while also encompassing shades of punk, pop, country and western, Bolan, Bowie, rockabilly, garage and even a touch of Motown.

FLESH FOR LULU
Sweden 1987/London 2013 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Errols, Gothenburg, Sweden; September 5, 1987. Fairly good FM broadcast. Live at The Borderline, London, UK; October 14, 2013. Fairly good audience recording.

Here is a tribute from Dime member rayrad:

It always seemed kind of crazy to me when people get upset at the death of someone they didn’t know but for some reason, the news on Friday - that Nick Marsh had succumbed to the cancer he’s been fighting for the last year - just broke my heart.

Maybe I’m crying for lost youth - in the mid-’80s, a skinny, over-excited 16/17/18-year-old, I saw Flesh play scores of times (up until quite recently, I’d probably seen them more than any other band).Back then, my friends and I were pretty much convinced that if we could just accurately replicate Nick’s hair, our lives would be as good as made…

I got to see Flesh again this one last time. Only Nick remained from the original lineup but they tore through these songs - songs that have been etched into my brain for 30 years - like they were written the week before.

No tarnishing the memory. If anything, I flew home on a tide of adrenalin, feeling momentarily teenage again.

Stupidly - unforgivably - I passed on the chance to see them earlier this year at London’s version of the Brooklyn Bowl. It’s a drag to get to from where I live. It was a busy week and I figured I’d see them again.

As it turns out, that was the last Flesh For Lulu show that there’ll ever be. The world is a poorer place without Nick in it - that I’m sure of. Most acutely feeling that, of course, will be his partner and two young daughters.

For a man who wrote so many indelible hooks, he was criminally under-appreciated and music never made him much of a living. There’s a fund that had been set up to help while Nick fought the cancer - and will now help to support his family. Please consider giving something if the music he’s left us with ever made you as happy as it’s made me.

Rock n roll is stupid but it’s the most glorious, wonderful, life-affirmingly stupid thing there is and Nick Marsh was one of its best and purest ambassadors.

Here’s to him…

Nick leaves a partner, Katherine, and two young daughters, Ava and Rosa. Please consider making a donation to their family fund in his memory - visit gofundme.com/marshfamily.
