DHAFER YOUSSEF
France 2015 [no label, 1CD]
Jazz à Vienne, Théâtre Antique, Vienne, France; June 29, 2015. Very good FM broadcast.
Tunisian Dhafer Youssef is a composer, singer and oud player. He developed an interest in jazz at an early age and clandestinely listened to it during his education at a Qur’anic school. He later left Tunisia to start a jazz career and has lived in Europe since 1990, usually in Paris or Vienna. - wikipedia
In 2013, he released Birds Requiem, of which several of the tracks were performed at this Vienne show. Reviewing the album, Glenn Astarita wrote at allaboutjazz.com:
Tunisian oud maestro Dhafer Youssef imparts a holistic world music vista, encompassing jazz, rock and spiritual inclinations while retaining the core Arabic modalities on the aurally picturesque Birds Requiem. And his chant-like, resonating vocals entwine mystical attributes with near-flawless control amid passages that induce an impression of sacred exchanges with a higher entity.
On March 18, 2015, three terrorists attacked the Bardo National Museum in the Tunisian capital city of Tunis, and took hostages. Twenty-one people, mostly European tourists, were killed at the scene, while an additional victim died 10 days later. Around 50 others were injured. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attack.
On June 26, 2015, 38 people, 30 of whom were British, were killed when an armed gunman attacked a hotel in Port El Kantaoui, about 10 kilometres north of the city of Sousse, Tunisia. It was the deadliest non-state attack in the history of modern Tunisia, with more fatalities than the 22 killed in the Bardo National Museum attack in March 2015.
This is music for the current Muslim fasting month - perhaps through sacrifice and restrain, one can reflect and know more about oneself (click here).
