Blur have come a long way since their formation in 1988 when they were hailed as the fresh face of British pop. In April 2015, they released their eighth studio album, The Magic Whip, which was partially recorded in Hong Kong. In 2013, Blur found themselves “stranded” in Hong Kong for five days when Japan’s Tokyo Rocks Music Festival was cancelled. During that time, they worked on new material in the studio. The album cover artwork features Chinese words which literally means Blur Magic-whip in neon-lit fashion. The group also worked with art director Tony Hung, who also created the lyric video for “Go Out”.
“The album title, The Magic Whip, was multifaceted (according to vocalist and musician Damon Albarn),” says Hung. “An ice cream in the UK, a firework in China and a ‘whip’ in a political sense. These extremes would reflect the different textures, breadth and depth of the album.” Hung says that the band wanted a cover that touched on those themes and that also had a “rawer feel” to give a sense of how the record came together in Hong Kong (the band recorded quickly, in a small studio in the city). - wikipedia
