JIM CROCE
Philadelphia 1967/Cleveland 1972 [no label, 1CD]

Live with Ingrid Croce on the Gene Shay Program, WIOQ 102.5 FM, Philadelphia; 1967 (rebroadcast 1984). Very good FM. Live at the Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, OH; November 15, 1972. Very good soundboard (vinyl rip; slight vinyl noise).

With hits such as I Got A Name, I’ll Have To Say I Love You In A Song, Time In A Bottle and Bad Bad Leroy Brown, one tends to think of Jim Croce more as a singer-songwriter than a folk singer. Back then, with the Jim Croce Trio in 1967, he was closer to Peter, Paul And Mary; and when Croce put Kipling’s Gunga Din poem to music, he recalled Phil Ochs. In 1973, Jim Croce and lead guitarist Maury Muehleisen and five others were killed when their airplane crashed in Louisiana.

Thanks to John G Huber who shared the Philadelphia show at The Traders’ Den.

Thanks to wolfsbane for sharing the Cleveland show at Dime.

wolfsbane noted:

This is a great show that I had on vinyl back in the late ’70s, and fortunately my brother still had a copy. This is a fresh rip from his vinyl bootleg. The name of the boot is “Dead Men Still Tell Tales”.

I had recently seeded this show at a couple of other torrent sites, but this one is a bit different. The previous lineage was “vinyl > Magix > CD > EAC > WAV > FLAC Level 6″. At the urging of some folks, I was able to remove a generation by getting the direct rip from vinyl from my brother for this torrent. I don’t know that there is an appreciable difference in sound quality, but there you have it. A “generation” has now been removed.

Anyway, the sound is really great - my old copy of the bootleg guide “Hot Wacks” calls it “excellent stereo” and I can’t argue. It’s up there with the best of the Jim Croce boots in terms of sound quality and performance, in my opinion. Hope you enjoy this!

Lineage:
Philadelphia: FM > master cassette > cdr > wav > FLAC
Cleveland: vinyl > Magix > WAV > FLAC Level 6
