LOU REED
Cleveland 1980 [no label, 2CD]
Live at the Agora Theatre, Cleveland, OH; May 27, 1980. Very good to excellent soundboard.
Lou Reed passed away on October 27, 2013. He would have been 73 today.
Thanks to Mightyfox for sourcing the tracks; and to bgreen for sharing them at Lossless Legs in 2007.
bgreen’s original notes:
I have banged my head on this one for a while now to try to figure out a few points of conflict. I have exhausted all resources I could find to add some clarification so I am going to put this out in hopes that someone may have some information on this, I am certainly no Lou Reed expert. Points of conflict are listed below. Overall a great sounding source and from what I can tell is totally uncirculated up until now. No editing other than retracking and removing dead air and repeat material has been done on this since the professional transfer.
When I received the raw waves, there were three different tracks for “Heroin”. Two are definitely different and the last was a partial from d2t02. I have omitted the partial track. The other two baffle me. d1t06 and d2t02 both seem to be complete. d1t06 is 9:31 seconds and d2t02 is 15:23? D2t02 is also preceded by a 30 second snippet of “how do you speak to an angel” that seems to fade seamlessly into the second take of heroin. This would lead me to believe that there is some missing material.
D2t03 and d2t04 also had duplicate tracks. These were omitted.
I have seen two records of set lists for a show at this venue for this date. Neither of them match this source. I have talked with the one fellow from a Lou Reed site and he noted that there was an early show and a late show for this date. He only knows the late shows exists because he was informed by a band member that it was taped and has never seen or heard the set so he was unable to add much clarification.
d2t05 this track is nine minutes of crowd banter. I included it to preserve the integrity of the show.
Flaws:
- d1t01 There is a volume spike in the first 30 seconds of the track.
- d2t01 This is a 30 second partial of “how do you speak to an angel”. The beginning is cut
- d2t07 Cut at the end.

Meanwhile, lurid_uk commented at Dime:
This seems to be a mishmash of songs: it looks as if it includes selections from both sets from the Cleveland Agora show on May 27, 1980. Whatever the source, this is another great concert from the spring 1980 US tour to support “Growing Up In Public”. Quality and performance are both superb: play this LOUD and you won’t regret it.
