BYRDS
San Francisco 1967 [no label, 1CD]

Live at Winterland, San Francisco, CA; December 9, 1967. Early set. Fair to good audience recording.

Given the sound, this is for the collector - some might even say it’s almost like scrapping the barrel. Byrds fans, on the other hand, will be eternally grateful. And don’t forget to check out the blistering Milestones.

Thanks to kneesfudd for the remastering efforts and for sharing the tracks at Dime.

kneesfudd’s notes:

Non hi-fi but magical & illuminating none-the-less.

WARTS: A little choppy and has tiny speed glitches a couple of times, but overall acclimate to the altitude and you will fly. Surely missed some dropouts and tape garble (or couldn’t repair them). Track 04 has a late, rough start with some tape chew and speed issues for a few seconds but it’s MUCH smoother than it was. Track 08 has cut in it near the end.

Thanks also to laryddave for the front cover.

Lineage:
unknown mono recording equipment > master audience mono reel-to-reel tape > unknown generations of tape > unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B off.

Remastering 2014-12: flacs > Audacity (glitches, dropouts, clap reduction, volume adjustments, Trax 1 and 2 averaged -0.65 pitch correction, then at tapeflip or tape change from #3 until the end averaged -1.35 - both single pass per segment after frequency analysis and with pitchpipe verification, no equalisation). More offset adjustments - checked & fixed every 30 seconds. Many more glitches patched and fixed MANY volume variations including several hundred to match up the channels better (it’s from a mono tape & you could hear ‘em!). Also fixed a lot of the tape chew/jitter issues in the first 2 minutes. Most claps were reduced a LOT, one by one.
